Turning a challenge - into inspiration

As anyone with a special needs child knows,

the care is ongoing, and doesn’t necessarily end when that child becomes an adult. The strain on a parent to provide, and still maintain meaningful job, is a major challenge.

Sylvia illustrates this dynamic perfectly. While she’s worked in the healthcare field her entire life, she’s had to also care

for her 29 year old son, Stephen, for all of his life. Money was tight, and much of life outside the home was put on hold.

Now, as a paid employee of IMPACT, she is able to

continue working her regular job, while also getting paid to do what she was already doing: caring for Stephen.

“Frankly, I was shocked,” she says of learning about being a Direct Support Professional. “I had no idea a program like this existed, and the sad thing is that there must be thousands of families just like ours that don’t know about the relief IMPACT provides.”

Now, Stephen is thriving, and over the last few years has grown by leaps and bounds. The bills are easier to pay, and Sylvia can even afford to take the family on trips to see long time friends out of state.

“IMPACT has been a blessing, and an inspiration!”
